► Remuneration for the Sabbaticals of ULU

Remuneration for the Sabbaticals of ULU

This motion seeks to encourage openness and transparency in the system whereby the Remuneration of Sabbatical officers is reviewed and recommended. It proposes that there is an independent remuneration review body which undertakes this process and reports to Union Council and Finance Committee.

This Union Notes

1.             That Council agreed to a new remuneration package for the Sabbatical Executive Officers and the London Student Editor during 2003-04.

2.             That the ULU Regulations require updating to incorporate this policy.

This Union Believes

1.      That a body independent of the Officers of the Union should review and make recommendations on Sabbatical Remuneration.

This Union Resolves

1.             To DELETE Regulation A:4:2 which states:

“The Sabbatical Office is whole-time. That means Sabbatical Officers cannot during duty hours without the permission of the Union Council engage in duties unrelated to their Office and outside the Union, whether the Officer receives payment for those other duties or not.  Sabbatical Officers shall receive a net allowance, the level of which is approved by CSAM and is equivalent to 150% of the DES postgraduate main rate of grant for the Academic Year in which the majority of their term of office falls.”

2.             To ADD new Regulation A:4:2 in the form:

“The Sabbatical Office is whole-time. That means Sabbatical Officers cannot during duty hours, without the permission of the Union Council, engage in duties unrelated to their Office and outside the Union; whether the Officer receives payment for those other duties or not.  Sabbatical Officers shall receive a net allowance, the level of which is approved by CSAM, whereby the formula for calculation is reviewed every five years or more frequently by a body independent of the Staff and Executive Officers of the Union. The Senior Treasurer shall co-ordinate the work of the independent Remuneration Review Body and shall take advice from both the Finance Committee and the Union Council.  Remuneration for the Sabbaticals and the formula by how it is calculated shall be approved, from time to time, by the Union Cooncil.”

This Union Further Resolves

1.      That the current remuneration formula is circulated at the next meeting of the Council, for information, and formally recorded in the minutes of that meeting.
