REGARDING CHANGES TO ULU SPORTS AND SOCIETIES REGULATIONS
Proposed by: Rob Davenport [ULU V-P Sports]
Seconded by: Claire Wren [ULU V-P Finance & Societies]
INTRODUCTION
With the imminent change of the Sabbatical jobs that will introduce the role of VP (Sports and Societies), and with ULU constantly reviewing the suitability of the way it delivers its activities (which has resulted in the advent of Networks), this seemed an opportune time to consult our existing Sports and Societies on the way ahead.
Via a circulated questionnaire and full discussions at meetings, several proposals were put forward to the Sports and Societies Committee, which considered each at its most recent meeting and made recommendations on changes to the Sports and Societies regulations.
While some minor amendments to existing regulations are proposed, together with the introduction of two sections, no major structural reorganisation of Sports and Societies is desired at this time.
In simple terms, the proposed changes are as follows:
1. To allow for one representative of each Sport or Society to attend meetings of their respective committee, instead of two. This is currently the requirement for networks.
2. To more clearly define Sports according to established governing body lists rather than by the magic word "competitive", and to give Sports and Societies Committee a clear role in allowing for special cases.
3. To introduce an Annual Meeting jointly for Sports, Societies and Networks in the Summer Term to give a better understanding of what each does and how much money each gets, to improve relations between the diverse groups and allow an opportunity for them to collectively influence policy and regulations that apply more or less equally to Sports and Societies.
NETWORKS
Currently, there are approximately equal numbers of Sports and Societies (25-30 of each), but just one Network. When Networks were introduced earlier this year, they were assigned three representatives to Sports and Societies Committee (however, this change was not made to the Constitution). Currently, the committee thinks that the number of representatives of Networks on Sports and Societies Committee should be one instead of three. This would also create less of a shift in the dynamics of the committee than if three reps were introduced. Section 8.5 of the Constitution will need to be amended at the next available opportunity.
THIS UNION RESOLVES
1. To approve the amended Sports and Societies Regulations (Regulation F) as appended.
2. To approved the amendment to Regulation D.2.2 (iv) as appended.
3. To mandate Governance Committee to amend the membership of the Sports and Societies Committee in section 8.5 of the Constitution at the next available opportunity.
