► Navy (ULRNU)
HMS Puncher is the unit's own coastal training craft. Each member is expected to complete at least 2 weekends and a 14-day training cruise in Puncher over the course of a year. These periods are often conducted with other URNU vessels, thereby encouraging a little friendly rivalry!
London Naval Unit
The University of London Royal Naval Unit (URNU) is a unique way of learning about the role and work of the Royal Navy without being committed to any long-term obligation. Membership is open to male and female undergraduates who meet certain admission criteria. These include a short interview and a medical examination.
Successful applicants, joining in the rank of Officer Cadet, advancing to Honorary Midshipman RNR in the second and subsequent years, are expected to attend weekly training nights (Tuesday evenings) at the unit's Brompton Road headquarters. Lectures aim to equip unit members with the basics of navigation, seamanship and leadership in preparation for sea training in HMS PUNCHER.
The unit also enjoys an extremely active social programme: formal dinners and official cocktail parties, both ashore and afloat, take their place alongside more relaxed occasions. In addition unit members have access to a wide range of sporting activities including sailing, skiing, rugby, hockey and adventurous training.
Recruitment to the unit takes place once a year in early October.
Presentation evenings will be held at the Unit headquarters on the evenings of 26th Sept and 03rd Oct for anyone interested in finding out more about the URNU.
