ULU believes that an expansion of the student loans scheme to include postgraduates would have widespread benefits. Higher education research is recognised as making a significant contribution to the wealth of the nation, as well as to its general health and wellbeing. However, currently some students are dissuaded from entering postgraduate education because they cannot overcome the funding barrier. The vast majority of postgraduate students are self-funding, as studentships from research councils and academic institutions are limited in number and extremely competitive.
The absence of available funding might also be seen as inconsistent with the government's widening access agenda, as there is some evidence that students from lower socio-economic groups are deterred from postgraduate study because of financial constraints. An extension of the student loans scheme to postgraduates would allow students to defer the current up-front cost of postgraduate study and thereby open up the sector to a greater number of individuals. Not only would this benefit the individuals in question, it would also have economic advantages in terms of promoting growth in the higher education sector. It would also make a significant contribution to the nation's economic and intellectual wealth. Click here for the link to the online petition.
