► Access to Finance
One of ULU’s priority campaigns this year will be a focus on student finance. We will be looking at what finance is available to students and how we can make this more accessible.
There have been many changes to the way education is funded and ULU wants to make sure that students and union officers know about these changes and what money is available to them.
Some students will receive loans, other Higher Education Maintenance Grants; some will get bursaries and others scholarships. This is such a complicated mix of funding that the result is that many students miss out on money which is available to them. ULU will be researching what financial support different colleges are offering their students, and making sure that College Officers know what there students can get.
We are also working hard to be ready for the 2009 funding review. Currently our priorities for this are to Keep The Cap on top-up fees and to lobby for a London Weighting to be added to the Higher Education Maintenance Grant. Keep The Cap is an NUS wide campaign, and we will work closely with them on this issue. The London Weighting for the Higher Education Maintenance Grant is a campaign which ULU started last year. We have already had support from many MP’s across London, and we will continue building political support for this when the debate happens in 2009.
