President takes campaign to City Hall
This year ULU will continue to campaign to extend the 30% student travel discount on London’s public transport. Student travel patterns have changed dramatically over recent years and students now require more flexibility to be built into the discount scheme. An extension of the scheme, to include single and day tickets, would enable more students to access the travel discounts and make the scheme fairer.
Last year’s campaign gained a great deal of momentum and received widespread support not only from students but also from Heads of Colleges and other key organisations, like the British University Sports Association. The findings of our research and consultation were published in a campaign report, which ULU presented to the GLA in May. The Mayor’s chief advisor issued a statement that the GLA are taking this campaign seriously and that “detailed consideration will be given to the extension and resources will be dedicated to conducting further research on student travel behaviour in London”
In the coming year we will continue to run the TfL petition adding to the 5,000 signatures that we have already collected. You can pledge your support by simply emailing your name and college to [email protected] . This year we also plan to raise the campaign’s profile in the media and will campaign to put student travel on the political agenda in the run up to the Mayoral elections.
If you’d like to get involved with this campaign email Jennifer[email protected] or Ashley [email protected] . With your continued support we can go on to win this campaign and help London students save an additional £15 million a year!
