► Chair of Council

Hi all, I'm Rob this year's Chair of Council. In a nutshell, I facilitate the democratic decision-making bodies of ULU which include the Union Council and some of its Committees (such as Sports & Societies Committee, Finance Committee and the Executive Committee). Involvement in ULU's governance is extremely important for students and my priorities this year are to be available to you to help you know how to get changes done, have your say and how to hold your representatives accountable for their actions.

Council is the supreme governing body of ULU and it meets regularly throughout the year and is made of representatives from each of the student bodies of the Colleges, the officers of the Union and a few other student representatives elected by you guys. You can find all its dates and the topics being discussed under the Council's own link on the ULU Website. Just to give you a taster of the work Council has done so far this year:

- it elected Dan Lazerides from Royal Holloway to the Governance Committee and Laurels Committee. It elected Daryn McCombe from King's College to be another student representative on the University's Council, the Senate, the Committee on Student Activities & Management (CSAM) and also onto ULU's own Finance Committee.
- it elected Shayaan Afsar as Part-time & Mature Students' Officer on the ULU Executive Committee
- it elected Ek Ming Tay as International Students' Officer on the ULU Executive
- it elected Chen Shi as Intercollegiate Halls Officer on the ULU Executive

- it approved to campaign to extend the Transport for London Travel Discount to Day and Single Tickets
- it approved to establish a postgraduate welfare advice service within ULU
- it agreed not to abolish the position of Men's Officer
- it agreed to consult on the future role of ULU and how ULU should in the future be governed
- it approved to campaign for people to give blood, recognising that gay and bisexual men, and those who have had sexual relations with these groups, cannot give blood
- it approved an amendment to the Constitution to allow Associate Members of ULU to join ULU's clubs and societies
- it established a new Elections Committee to resource the ULU election process
- it approved to campaign for a London Weighting grant to further fund students who come to London to study
- it approved that ULU will campaign for a retention of student voting representatives on University committees
- it affiliated ULU to UKCOSA - an international students organisation
- it affiliated ULU to NPC - a postgraduate students campaigning charity and network
- it approved the current budget for 2006/7

Now Council cannot do these things without your support - your voice getting to your student representatives. Council received an address from the NUS Women's Officer on liberation and the women's campaign. Look out for further guest speakers - suggest some yourself!

Get involved in your Union. Have your say. And leave your mark - there are so many ways of doing this, but as Council is the head of the Union democratically, this is where you need your voice heard. Anyone can attend and speak. Only delegates can vote - contact your College Union to find out who your delegates are and tell them how to represent you!
