► Environment and Ethics Network

Environment & Ethics Network

My name's Jennie Cowan and I'm the new Environment and Ethics (E & E) Officer at ULU.

My aim is to really get everyone thinking about E&E issues this year. I want to provide information for people to use as a base for discussion and when accessing their own way of life.

I am currently organising fortnightly  talks, from outside speakers, at ULU. These should be informative and I hope people will use this knowledge to enter into a mindset of sustainability when going about their daily lives.

I am also considering conducting debating sessions so students can appreciate the wide-range of opinions on E&E matters. Any suggestions for topics that you would wish to know more about or discuss are greatly received.

To make these events a success and to create the discussion I am hoping for, I am devoting a lot of time to setting up the Environment & Ethics Communication Network. I am compiling a huge database of contact details for society presidents and union presidents which will hopefully be passed onto as many people as possible. If you are a department rep or think you could be useful, please send me an email.

To be sent details of upcoming events direct, please add yourself to the database by either clicking here, or emailing me at [email protected]

I hope it goes without saying now that if you have any suggestions or need any help with any E&E events please get in touch. Also, if you are a society that is holding your own E&E event let me know and I shall put it up in the 'Upcoming Events' section.

Hope to meet you soon,

Jennie

Over 16million people from UK go abroad every year.
Traveling to unfamiliar places opens up your eyes, brings a great joy and excitement, and lets you think about who you are.

Yes, indeed there is significance to traveling, and that is also true for constituents at your destinations.
Inconsiderate tourism has been destroying local economy, culture and tradition, and natural resources.
How can we avoid ruining local environment while getting the most out of your distinctive experience? Here the idea of sustainable tourism comes.

Sustainable tourism: supports integrity of place
                               benefits residents
                               conserves resources
                               respects local culture and tradition
                               does not abuse its product
                               strives for quality (not quantity)
                               means great trips!

What we can do?
-Hold workshops or study hour to educate us on sustainable tourism
-Bring speakers to educate the student body
-Hold a panel discussion with people from academics, NGOs, corporations (especially of those hotel business), and government

-Negotiate with the school to integrate sustainability into related undergraduate curriculum
-Publish a brochure for students to refer to before they arrange their trips
-Anything comes up to your mind!

Please send Yurika Morita ([email protected]) an email, if you would like to bring some of your ideas on, or want to participate in activities related to, or if you just have questions on the subject.
