INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION
![]() London WC1H 0AL T 020 7612 6181 F 020 7612 6183 www.ioe.ac.uk The Students’ Union is a central part of student life at the Institute. It is also one of the Institute’s main social centers, since our lively atmosphere and range of facilities attract staff as well as students from the Institute and from other colleges of the University of London. Founded in 1913 to promote and safeguard the interests of its members, the Students’ Union is also the voice of all students at the Institute. Our elected representatives sit on the Institute’s main academic and welfare services committees and ensure that your voices are heard. Our services, which include a newly refurbished bar, cafeteria, shop, locker room and the counselling service, are deigned to make your life as a student as pleasant as possible. A meeting room is available for you to book and use for social events, festivals and exercise classes. We are always looking to improve our services so that they meet the needs of all students and enhance the students’ academic and social experience in London. For the meantime, don’t miss out on the cultural festivities celebrated by our societies throughout the year at our bar and café! All students automatically become members of the Students’ Union, though you are legally entitled to opt out if you wish. All members are entitled to vote and stand in elections for the Union sabbatical posts and delegations to Union conferences as well as representative positions on Institute committees and the Student Representative Council. All students are encouraged to participate in Union societies which are set up and organized by students and given financial and administrative support by the Union. In addition to the busy academic life at the Institute, students find many ways to enhance the social life through celebrating cultural diversities. The Union works closely with the Institute in supporting and maintaining an efficient and effective student course representative system encouraging members to become actively involved. The healthy functioning of representative systems allows for student issues to be addressed effectively and consistently. The Students’ Union is run by three elected student sabbatical officers and by a team of permanent staff members who are available on a daily basis to deal with any issues or queries that arise or to refer you to the appropriate person for advice and/or action when necessary. Further to this, we can represent you directly in your dealings with other Institute departments. For more information about us and how to get involved, please visit the Students’ Union either from the entrance at Level Four or from the rear of the building or visit www.ioe.ac.uk/studentlife. |
