Valid AULUC 2006
ULU’S PRIORITY CAMPAIGNS
Proposed by Scott Rice, ULU President
Seconded by Peter Taylor, [ULU V-P Finance and Societies]
THIS UNION NOTES
1. That one of the most important roles of ULU is to campaign on behalf of London’s students.
2. That ULU wrote to all constituent institutions to collate what issues they wanted to see prioritised.
3. That there has been increasing speculation and concern over the issues of education funding and the threat of the introduction of top-up fees.
4. The creation of a Mayor for London and a GLA,
5. The varying standards, availability and cost of accommodation in London,
6. The increase of institution-inspired demands on students on Wednesday afternoons.
7. Problems associated with student access to adequate transport.
8. The success of previous priority campaigns
THIS UNION BELIEVES
1. In common with all student unions ULU has a duty to work towards alleviating student hardship.
2. That increasing costs threaten a diverse student population, and drive those that do attend into unacceptable levels of debt.
3. That the creation of a London Mayor and Greater London Assembly gives London students the chance to put their problems as residents and students before a specific body for the first time in over a decade.
4. That accommodation in London should be safe, affordable, and available to all students.
5. That Wednesday afternoons should be kept free for pastoral activities.
6. That ULU should continue to work alongside London Transport and others to address further issues affecting students.
THIS UNION RESOLVES
1. To make:
1.1 Education Funding (campaigns against top-up fees and general student hardship)
1.2 Campaigning to, and building links with, the Mayor and GLA
1.3 Accommodation (standards, costs and availability)
1.4 Wednesday afternoons free (ensuring time tabled teaching and other commitments do not fall on Wednesday afternoons)
1.5 London transport
Specific campaigns for the forthcoming year and to mandate the Executive Committee to make all possible progress on them.
