Welcome!

Hello and welcome to the University of London!

The Karate Club has a long tradition of excellence in training students in Karate, both as a competitive sport and as a self-defense skill. New members of all levels are welcome to join us throughout the year, and sessions continue through most holidays and the summer.

Our sessions are always mixed-level and cover a combination of basic techniques, drills, applications and self-defense, forms, sparring, weapons, and fitness. So whatever you're looking for, there's probably a session that fits you.

Locations

During the week, we train in one of the rooms on the 3rd floor of the ULU building.
On Saturdays we train at Pavy Gym, which is located on the King's College London campus at London Bridge.
Our chief instructor also runs sessions in north Enfield.

Club Membership

To become a member of ULUKC, you first need a ULU card. These are free for Full Members and are valid for one academic year and can be obtained from the ULU reception desk. All you need is your college ID and a small passport-type photo. (Click here to find out the difference between Full and Associate Members of ULU.)

There are two membership forms to be filled in:

The membership form for ULU clubs can be found online here. This makes you a member of the student activity. It is valid for one academic year.
You also need a KSK membership form, which you can find here. This will cover your insurance and martial arts licence under FEKO. It is valid for one calendar year.

The membership fee is £20.

Lesson costs

The first session is FREE for everyone. So you have nothing to lose giving it a try.
Following that, we charge a small fee per session, which goes towards running costs and club activities. Depending on your level of commitment to the club you can pay per session (£4) or take advantage of our discounted monthly fee (£10) or term fee (4 months: £40). Associate members are not subsidized by ULU and thus are not eligible for the discount.

Other expenses

Of course, if you decide that you like karate, we'd like to see you in a proper karategi (the white pyjama uniform). Our chief instructor sources them for about £27, or you can provide your own.

And if you're really proud to be a member of our club, you can order our branded social hoodie or polo.

Competitions, Trips, Boot Camps, Seminars

ULUKC subsidizes entry and travel to competitions, for Full Members. The university championships (BUCS) is our main target. Other championships, local, national or international are also on the agenda subject to your level of interest.

KSK has organized highly successful and enjoyable trips to seminars and boot-camps, guest instructor seminars, special-interest sessions, general self-defense sessions, and the Art of Movement Kata Competition.

In June, KSK organizes a Martial Arts Day, where we get to spend a whole Saturday training out in the park and having fun, followed by a social event in the evening. We've also repeatedly taken part in the Enfield Town Autumn Show, in September, with a stall and demonstrations.

Follow ULUKC and KSK on Facebook to stay up to date with upcoming events.

Socials

We always grab a drink or two at the ULU student bar or at the pub after session.

Other regular socials include our freshers welcome event in October and the Christmas social in December. However, most events we organize also have a social aspect, including our trips to seminars and tournaments, our Martial Arts Day in June, the Enfield Town Show in September.
