ULU Postgraduate Academic Welfare Service
GUIDANCE ON STRUCTURE OF UNION
AS IT APPLIES TO THE ADVICE SERVICE
The postgraduate academic welfare adviser reports anonymous statistics and an update on identified issues to the relevant ULU Committee and/or sabbatical officer (as detailed in the ULU constitution).
The executive committee is responsible for the day to day running of the whole union and the vice-president (welfare & student affairs) is responsible for all welfare matters. This includes campaign work, representation within the University of London and related organisations and the advice given to students.
However, the day to day running of the advice service is the responsibility of the welfare adviser. This post holder reports directly to the membership services manager. The vice-president (welfare & student affairs) does not have access to private and confidential casework and neither do the senior managers, except in the case of a complaint. (Procedure detailed in constitution).
The role of the vice-president (welfare & student affairs) sabbatical officer is to identify trends and social policy issues arising from casework and represent these concerns and issues to the institution and external agencies. The statistics from the advice service can directly inform the direction and nature of the campaigning work carried out within the union and the sabbatical officer has a crucial role in making this happen.
The distinctions between the role of the welfare adviser and vice-president (welfare & student affairs) are outlined in the diagram entitled “The Advice Cycle”.
