► ULU Cards

ULU Cards

November 2004

This Union Notes:

1.              That ULU issues ULU Membership Cards to the full members of the Union.

2.              That ULU cards are used in online voting annually electing the Chair of Council, the Executive Officers of the Union and the Editor of London Student.

3.              That ULU cards are also required to join ULU’s sports clubs and societies, and are used as a form of ID to access the building.

4.              Mental health awareness is a priority of both this Union and the Department of Health.

5.              Nightline is a major support and resource for students.

This Union Believes:

1.              That students should be able to carry fewer ID/membership cards around with them and that this is a goal of ULU too.

2.              That ULU cards are relatively expensive both in terms of purchase but also in terms of time taken to issue and processing the backing-card data.

3.              It is vital that students are aware of Nightline.

4.              It is of paramount importance that students have the telephone number of Nightline available in time of need.

5.              That most students tend to carry their college card with them at all times.

This Union Further Notes:

1.              Joint College/ULU Cards have been rolled out this year to Imperial College, Royal Academy of Music and Queen Mary.

2.              That the students’ data from IC, RAM and QM is transferred over to ULU under the terms of the agreement between the College and ULU.

3.              That joint schemes should be extensively promoted with the Heads of Colleges and their staff and that this should be pursued by the Executive Committee and senior union officers at the College Unions.

4.              That the sooner ULU Cards are phased out the better in terms of finance and administration, both for ULU and for its student members.

This Union Resolves:

1.              To lobby the Heads of Colleges and their staff to adopt joint College/ULU cards.

2.              For 2005-06, in descending order of preference, then options for ULU Cards shall be:

*A* ::  College Card branded with ULU and College Union logo

*B* ::  College Union Card branded with ULU logo

*C* ::  Stand alone ULU Card

3.              With consultation amongst staff and students, the Sabbatical Officers shall have authority to approve joint card schemes and encouraging them amongst the Colleges and College Unions and shall approve any further operational matters regarding the administration of ULU Cards.

4.              To desire:

a)       To only issue Option *A* cards in 2005-06, but understands that the process of setting up joint schemes, data sharing and general administration may require that a longer period of time elapses before a joint scheme is realised and fully established.

b)       That the ULU logo shall be clearly branded on joint cards (obverse or reverse) and ideally accompanied by the text ‘University of London Union’ and any additional text as agreed by the Executive Committee.

c)       That data shall be made available to ULU within two weeks of the registration of students at the institution.

5.             That the Nightline logo and telephone number should be added to the joint scheme cards of all colleges who wish to add the logo and telephone number and only if that college buys in to the Nightline service and that ULU should ensure this is raised during discussions with colleges.

This Union Further Resolves:

1.              To cease issuing ULU Cards to full members completely by 1 August 2006, save that a College Union may request an exemption, to be agreed by the Executive Committee in exceptional circumstances.

2.              That students who are not members of their own College Union, for whatever reason, but who are members of ULU, shall still be entitled to a ULU logo branded card and that this is made clear to Colleges in terms of differing membership rules between Colleges Unions and ULU.

3.              To ensure that the joint card schemes, when agreed, give ULU full automatic use of data for the purposes of elections and other areas of membership services.
