► Carbon Monoxide Awareness Campaign

00/01 Policy

Valid AULUC 2006

CARBON MONOXIDE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

Proposed by: Chris Piper, [King’s College London, VP Education & Welfare Officer]

Seconded by: Karen Bates [Goldsmiths College , Welfare & Overseas Officer]

THIS UNION NOTES

1.        That every year 30-35 people die each year due to carbon monoxide poisoning in the home.

2.        Many hundreds more suffer illnesses associated with carbon monoxide poisoning such as headaches, drowsiness and general ill health.

3.        The highest concentration of these dangers occur in ‘low cost’ rented accommodation normally favoured by students and others on low incomes.

4.        That London, due to the shortage of houses, has forced some students into accommodation which may be classed as sub-standard due to being priced out of the market for better quality rented accommodation.

5.        That there are already laws in place, which put a requirement on the landlord to have the gas appliances checked at least once a year, to help prevent deaths and other illnesses from carbon monoxide poisoning. Landlords can be criminally prosecuted if they do not adhere to these rules.

6.        However many students in particular do not know the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning and many more do not know the that law can protect them from such dangers.

7.        This year a student of King’s College London, Alex Wade, died of carbon monoxide poisoning whilst on his medical elective in South Africa.

THIS UNION BELIEVES

1.        That no student should have to die or fall ill due to the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning.

2.        That students should be informed of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning to help prevent any further tragedies.

3.        That ULU is in a privileged position to reach out to a wide selection of students within London and so would be ideally placed to raise awareness within London.

THIS UNION RESOLVES

1.        To mandate the ULU Executive to start a campaign to help raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning across London.

2.        To mandate the ULU Executive to work as required with external organisations, to achieve this aim of raising awareness across London.
