► To Support the Make Poverty History Campaign

Motion to First Council

To support the Make Poverty History Campaign

This Union notes:

1.      That there currently exists a national campaign to end world poverty under the name of “Make Poverty History”

2.      That Make Poverty History is a collaboration of over 300 charities, campaign groups, trade unions, faith groups and celebrities

3.      That Britain holds the Presidency of the EU in the second half of 2005

4.      That the 20th anniversary of Live Aid was on the 13th July 2005

5.      That the report from The Commission for Africa was release in March 2005

6.      There is a national lobby of Parliament on November

This Union believes:

  1. That 2005 presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to ensure the leaders of the worlds richest countries seriously tackle world poverty

  2. That it is unacceptable for the world richest countries ignore the issue of world poverty

  3. That whilst in recent years promises have been made and some positive steps taken, the countries of the G8 must led the way to ending world poverty and the problem must be given a greater priority

  4. That many students across London have already expressed there support for the Make Poverty History campaign

  5. That ULU is well placed to co-ordinate a London wide effort on this campaign

This Union resolves:

  1. The ULU should publicly support and endorse the Make Poverty History campaign

  2. That ULU should co-ordinate a London wide approach to promoting the events and activities run by or in conjunction with the Make Poverty History movement

  3. That members of Council should lobby their own student unions and fellow student to participate in such events and activities

  4. That ULU should assist member unions to co-ordinate a presence on the Make Poverty History lobby of Parliament
