► ULU Membership and Working with the Colleges

01/02 Policy

Valid AULUC 2007

ULU MEMBERSHIP AND WORKING WITH THE COLLEGES

Proposed by Justine Stephens [ULU President]

Seconded by Mike Whalley [President, Students’ Union Royal Holloway Univeristy of London]

THIS UNION NOTES

1.          That the members of ULU are the registered internal students of the University of London as set out in Ordinance 19 of the University of London’s Ordinances which states "The University of London Union is not a federation of College student unions, but a Union for all students of the Colleges and Institutes of the University of London”.

2.          That during 2001-2002 ULU is absorbing the second year of a £160,000 cut in it base line subscriptions from Colleges.

3.       That a key aspect of the reduction in ULU’s funding was to provide ULU with financial stability.  At its meeting of 1/12/99 the University of London Council put in place a funding regime that will run until the next tri-annual review and until that time the levels of subscription receivable by ULU will remain as agreed by the University of London.

THIS UNION FURTHER NOTES

1.          That SURHUL had recently considered holding a referendum on the issue of value for money in relation to ULU and therefore membership of ULU.

2.          That since the motion was passed (29/05/2001) to hold a referendum a considerable amount of discussion has taken place between the Sabbatical teams (2001/2002) of ULU and SURHUL.

3.          That during these discussions a greater understanding of the relationship between SURHUL and ULU was developed.

4.          That these discussions have proven useful in respect of raising awareness of the relationship between the two Unions, generating understanding of the membership and funding arrangements of ULU, and in promoting dialogue as to how RHUL students can gain better value from their membership of ULU.

THIS UNION BELIEVES

1.        That working in partnership with College Unions is key to maximising the value of ULU to our members and the involvement of our members in our activities.

2.        That by working collectively with College Unions we can achieve more for the benefit of our mutual members.

THIS UNION FURTHER BELIEVES

1.        That the recent discussions with the Students’ Union at RHUL concerning whether or not SURHUL should hold a referendum on the value of ULU to RHUL students reinforces the need for ULU to engage both our members and our partners in College Unions in an ongoing dialogue as to how ULU can add value to our members.

THIS UNION RESOLVES

1.       To actively promote the spirit of collectivism with UL College Unions and build constructive working partnerships with them to further the interests of our mutual members

2.          To constantly seek ways to enhance the value of ULU to all our members

THIS UNION MANDATES

1.        ULU’s Sabbatical Officers to ensure that discussions continue and that dialogue as to how to achieve better value for students within the University of London takes place.

2.        The President to meet with each of the UL College Union President/senior student representative in order to further this dialogue.

3.        The Sabbatical Officers 2001/2002 to ensure that the resolutions arrived at from these discussions form an integral part of the hand over to their successors. Further, that such discussions should continue up until the University tri-annual review takes place and that the findings from this consultative process are submitted to the review in order that they may be considered within the process.
