01/02 Policy

Valid AULUC 2007

ULU’S PRIORITY CAMPAIGNS

Proposed by: The Sabbatical Executive Officers

THIS UNION NOTES

1.       That ULU has traditionally used its status as a London-wide collective to campaign on issues affecting our members and achieve results of benefit to all our students, and that this has been most effective when focussed on several major areas and organised into Priority Campaigns.

2.       That the Sabbatical Team have undertaken initial work on the proposed priority campaigns in consultation with member colleges, and have produced a draft campaign guide, circulated to members of Council for comment.

THIS UNION BELIEVES

1.          That ULU’s Four priority campaigns for 2001/02 should be “Education Funding”, “Accommodation”, “London Weighting”, and “London Transport”.

2.          That the aim of ULU’s Education Funding Campaign should be to fight for a funding system that enables all those who are able to benefit from HE to participate, and that the issue of funding does not act as a barrier or deterrent to any student.  ULU should also campaign for the government to progressively increase core funds for HE to ensure the delivery of high quality education.

3.          That the aim of ULU’s Accommodation Campaign should be to ensure that students living and studying in London have access to an acceptable standard of affordable and safe housing.

4.          That the aim of ULU’s London Weighting campaign should be to secure adequate funding arrangements to recognise fully the additional costs associated with living and studying in London.

5.          That the aims of ULU’s London Transport campaign should be to extend the discount scheme to the greatest number of students across all forms of London transport; to seek to provide an extended permanent student discount; and to campaign for a high quality of safe transport at an affordable cost to all students.

THIS UNION RESOLVES

1.          To approve the choice of the Priority Campaigns for 2001/02 as outlined above.

2.          To develop detailed strategies to fulfil the aims of the Priority campaigns, and to proceed with them in co-operation with member Unions.
