► Sudanese Society
Hello and welcome ten times over (Hababkum Ashara),
The Sudanese Cultural and Social Society at The University of London – SCSS (pronounced success), is a lively and friendly Society that brings together Sudanese students and staff from many of the university’s colleges. The Society currently has members from Kings College, LSHTM, Queen Mary, SOAS and UCL.
It was established with three main aims: To maintain its members' links with each other and their culture, to serve and inform its members and to project a positive image of our great country.
As enshrined in its constitution, the Society focuses on cultural and social activities and is completely independent and neutral.
The society has held events at which distinguished guests spoke on Sudanese Archaeology, Sudanese Anthropology and Sufism in Sudan. It is believed that the Society pioneered the holding of a ‘Sudanese careers event’. On that occasion several successful Sudanese (a doctor, an engineer and a PhD researcher) were invited to share their experiences and advise the Society’s members on how to enhance their career prospects. A Pakistani lecturer was also invited to add input on cross/multi cultural issues.
The Society also held a joint workshop on ‘Education Capacity Building in Sudan’ in conjunction with the Sudan Research Group -a UK group of Sudanese scholars, and the SOAS African Society.
Socially, the Society’s members meet for lunch at the beginning of every month and go out to dinner quite regularly.
Many good friendships have been formed through the Society; and the members involved in running the society through its Executive Committee have gained immensely by way of experience.
New events are constantly being planned and organised; and the Society has and is pursuing an exciting and ambitious Long Term Plan.
The Society’s Motto is: Together we are better. So, join us today and don’t be lonely!
We look forward to your friendship.
All the best,
SCSS.
