Two years ago ULU won agreement for student representation on the six subject area boards dealing with research postgraduate issues and we’re now entitled to two representatives on each board. The boards are intercollegiate, with all University of London research postgraduates falling under one of them, and they address important issues - so it’s crucial that postgraduates have a voice on them. Topics covered include: code of practice on postgraduate research programmes, examiners for research degrees, degree awarding powers, entrance requirements for MPhil and PhD, and the Bologna Process.
One major item that featured on the agenda for 2006-7 was the method of appointing examiners for PhDs. The Research Degrees Committee launched a consultation on this and all the SABs were asked for their opinions.
Meetings are only held about three times a year and generally run for under two hours so they aren’t too onerous. Plus you get free tea and biscuits! If you'd like more information please contact me at the email address given below.
The list of boards is as follows:
Engineering and Technology
Humanities
Life Sciences
Medicine
Physical and Mathematical Sciences
Social Sciences
The deadline for putting your name forward has been extended until 14th September. Please reply with your details, including which SAB you'd like to be a member of, to Annie Mitchell, Postgraduate Research and Casework Co-ordinator, at [email protected]
