► Paper K: Motion: Tidy up of Electoral Regulations
Motion to First Council
Tidy up of Electoral Regulations
This Union notes:
-
Regulation B.2.3 and the list of positions covered by exceptional eligibility procedures: women’s officer, men’s officer, postgraduate students’ officer, mature and part time students’ officer, students with disabilities officer, lesbian, gay and bisexual students officer, medical students’ officer and small and special colleges officer.
-
The position of international students’ officer.
-
The indicative policy of the council sessions 2004-5 on transgender representation.
-
Regulation B.2.3 v: Any candidate for "Students with Disabilities Officer" must be a student with disabilities.
-
Regulation B.3.2.
-
The paper ‘Election regulations motion to forth council’ passed 27th January 2003.
-
There are a number of small grammatical errors in the regulations pertaining to elections.
This Union believes:
-
An international student best represents the needs of international students.
-
A single disability, as distinct from multiple disabilities, should not be a bar to holding office.
-
That re-open nominations should provide an alternative to candidates, as per the spirit and statement of the paper referred to in This Union Notes.
-
That it is important to have clear regulations.
This Union resolves:
-
To add to Regulation B.2.3: vii) Any candidate for “International students’ officer? must be an international student.
-
To delete ‘disabilities’ from the end of B.2.3 v and replace with ‘one or more disabilities’, such that it reads: ‘Any candidate for “Students with disabilities officer? must be a student with one or more disabilities.
-
To insert, to B.3.2, after ‘Elections’, the words ‘contested by at least one candidate’.
-
To replace, in B.4.1, ‘and’ with ‘have’, such that it reads “...candidates must have every realistic expectation…?.
-
To insert, to B.6.3, after the word ‘to’, a comma, such that it reads “All questions must be posed to, and relevant to, all candidates for the particular post?.
