Issue 2

Welcome to the second issue of ULU’s fortnightly Campaigns Newsletter.

STOP AIDS - Campaign Bus to Visit ULU!

In the UK alone, 60,000 people have HIV.  15,000 do not know that they have it.

World AIDS Day is on Thursday (1st December).  Throughout next week, the STOP AIDS Campaign will be visiting venues throughout the country in a campaign bus.  ULU will be hosting the bus • immediately outside our building in Malet Street • on Tuesday (29th November).  Come along with questions, comments, or simply to find out more.  ULU is also backing the many sexual health events run by unions and student societies throughout the University of London.  Click here for details.

Reclaim the Night - TONIGHT!

Today (Friday, 25th November) is the UN International Day to End Violence Against Women.  ULU is supporting the annual Reclaim the Night event, in which women march through the streets in unity.   All women are welcome to assemble in Soho Square at 6.00pm this evening, to march together to the ULU building.  When the march arrives at ULU (about 7.30 • 8.00), a rally will take place in the Gallery bar; both women and men are invited to come along.  Speakers will include the ULU Women’s Officer, Jo Fried.  Find out more here.

Student Incomes Are Not Living Incomes

Research published this week has again shown that students on low incomes are often forced into part-time jobs.  Alarmingly, the study shows that full-time students who work for more than fifteen hours a week have their chances of receiving a First or a 2.1 cut by a third.  Nicky Grant, ULU Vice-President (Welfare) said that “This is further evidence that student incomes are not living incomes.  The Government must go further if it truly wants poorer students to have equal chances.”  Read more of the story here.

New Information Reveals Academic Arms Trade

ULU has reacted with anger to information revealed by the Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT).  This shows the level of arms investment undertaken by a number of British universities and colleges.  However, following much publicity and campaigning - including a major article in London Student - SOAS has announced its intention to sell its arms shares immediately.  Samuel Thomas, ULU Vice-President (Finance, Services and Operations) has called on all academic institutions to do likewise.  “I am sickened by the thought of our tuition fees being used in this way” he said.  You can read more on CAAT’s research here.
