Issue 7

Welcome to the latest issue of ULU’s fortnightly Campaigns Newsletter.  This is a busy time for ULU campaigns, so whatever your interests, there are plenty of opportunities to join in!

Multifaith Question Time on Tuesday!

Come along to ULU at 7.00pm on Tuesday (28th February) for our Multifaith Question Time.  This is a chance for students of all faiths and none to question leading commentators on the role of faith in student life.  Whether you’re interested in free speech and extremism, religious dress or evangelism on campus, you can raise the issues here.  Click here for details.  Ellie Levenson, a prominent journalist who will chair the event said “I am delighted that ULU promotes good interfaith relations and am pleased to be a part of open debate around this subject.”

Make Fairtrade Your Habit

Fairtrade Fortnight will take place from 6th – 20th March, with thousands of campaigning events taking place around Britain.  ULU will campaign throughout the fortnight, whilst giving its backing to students, student societies  and college unions organising their own events.  Don’t miss the third gathering of ULU’s Trade Fair Forum on Thursday, 16th March, focusing on how to be an effective ethical consumer.  Click here to read more about Fairtrade Fortnight.  If you’re organising an event, would you like it listed on the ULU website?  Or would you like ULU’s advice?  Feel free to send us an e-mail.

Spend New Money for Students’ Benefit, Says ULU

ULU has called for the income generated by top-up fees to be spent on student bursaries, improved facilities and staff salaries, insisting that these will all benefit students.  ULU’s acting president Samuel Thomas told the Guardian that “It is in the interests of students to be taught by well-paid and well-motivated lecturers”.  ULU’s officers gave their support to a call for lecturers to receive their first substantial pay increase in years.  However, they emphasised the need to avoid disruption to students.  You can read the Guardian article here

Your Chance to Take the Lead

Many of you are already involved in ULU’s campaigns – now you have the chance to lead them!  As we approach the ULU elections, nominations for several positions remain open until 3rd March.  This is an opportunity for any student to stand for either a part-time or paid sabbatical position.  Click here for the information you need.  Don’t’ be frightened!  Remember that if democracy means anything, it means that anyone can make a difference!
