Issue 6

Welcome to the latest issue of ULU’s fortnightly Campaigns Newsletter.  Many thanks to all of you who have supported ULU’s campaigns recently.

Trade Fair Forum on Thursday!

The second monthly gathering of ULU’s Trade Fair Forum will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday (9th February) at Queen Mary Students’ Union, SAC Meeting Room (click for directions).  The Forum is open to students from any College who are interested in fairtrade and global justice.  This is a chance to join a relaxed but interactive workshop on fairtrade campaigning.  Whether you’re planning a major event, or simply want to persuade your flatmates to buy fairtrade teabags, this Forum can help!  Click here to find out more.

ULU Campaigns Against Draft Mental Health Bill

ULU has resolved to campaign against the Government’s draft Mental Health Bill, insisting that it would curtail the rights of students facing mental ill-health.  ULU affiliated to the Mental Health Alliance, a coalition of over 70 service providers, user groups and professional organisations.  The Alliance campaigns against the Bill’s increase in powers of compulsion, and calls for greater use of tribunals and advocacy.  One in four students will experience mental ill-health during their studies.  Nicky Grant, ULU Vice-President (Welfare) told the media that  “Too many people already suffer in silence.  The draft Mental Health Bill’s reliance on compulsion would increase those numbers.”  Read more here.

Equalities Month Kicks Off at ULU

ULU marked Holocaust Memorial Day with a preview screening of Shooting Dogs, a gripping story of the Rwandan genocide.  (If you missed it, watch out for the cinema release on 31st March).  This marked the beginning of Equalities Month, a celebration of diversity within the University of London.  Events will be taking place in a number of Colleges, and the Month will close with a Multifaith Question Time on 28th February.  Leading religious commentators will debate the place of faith in student life.  This is a chance to promote understanding between faiths without shying away from difficult questions.  Click here to see who’s on the panel and to find out more.

ULU To Launch Student Campaigns Calendar

Are you or your society running a campaign that you would like to see publicised on the ULU website?  In addition to organising its own campaigns, ULU is a resource for campaigning students.  Several societies and groups have asked if ULU can promote their events online.  Our website currently includes a campaigns diary of events run by ULU, but in response to demand we will be launching a more comprehensive Student Campaigns Calendar during February.  If you’re involved in an event that you would like us to publicise, send us an e-mail with the details.  We want to hear from you!
