ULU To Mark Holocaust Memorial Day With Pre-Release Film Show
Don’t miss the chance to see Shooting Dogs, a gripping and authentic story of the Rwandan genocide. The film will be shown at ULU at 7.00pm this Thursday (26th January), but is not on general release until the end of March. In addition, ULU will run an exhibition from 9.30am – 7.00pm on Thursday and from 9.30am – 1.00pm on Friday. This will concern both the Holocaust and other genocides, and consider their relevance for today. Sabira Mohammed, ULU Racial Equality Officer said “Recent genocides in Rwanda and elsewhere show that we have still to learn the lessons of the Holocaust. Shooting Dogs has much to teach us all.” Click here for more details.
Trade Fair Forum Hits the Ground Running
Students from 11 Colleges flocked to ULU last Thursday for the first gathering of the ULU Trade Fair Forum. They joined in a workshop on fairtrade, tackling difficult questions and developing plans for their own campaigns. Students gave an enthusiastic response to the event, and are looking forward to an even larger turnout when the Forum next meets, on 9th February. Kaleigh Wall, Environment Officer at Queen Mary Students’ Union said “Thank you for the Trade Fair Forum – I think it’s excellent!”. Click here for details, photos and future plans.
ULU Makes Last-Minute Appeal for International Students
ULU has called on members of the House of Lords to protect the rights of international students. The Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Bill would remove the right of appeal from anyone denied clearance to study in the UK. ULU has campaigned against this measure for some time. As the Bill reaches its final stages, Nicky Grant, ULU Vice-President (Welfare) has made a last-minute appeal to spokespeople from all parties in the Lords. She told them that “international students make a significant financial and cultural contribution to the UK” and that we should not let their numbers fall. Healthy Living Success – But We Won’t Stop Here
ULU has celebrated its third successful annual Healthy Living Week. Students from across London joined in with activities ranging from salsa and football to yoga and meditation, some for the first time. Events ran at both ULU and College Unions. But ULU’s Healthy Living Campaign doesn’t end here! Our retail outlets are selling a greater range of healthy food options (they’re just as tasty as the rest!). ULU aims to empower students to take greater control of their health. Click here to read Nicky Grant’s Tip of the Week – designed to make healthy living easy!
