► Shorinji Kempo
Shorinji Kempo is a Japanese martial art with its roots in the teachings of Zen Buddhism, it has a strong emphasis on self defence coupled with a practical modern day philosophy. Founded by Doshin So, Shorinji Kempo is one of the world's largest martial arts organisations, with many federations world wide. It has recently celebrated its 60th anniversary.
Shorinji Kempo is a dynamic martial art, including "hard techniques" such as strikes and blocks, and 'soft techniques' such as throws, joint locks and releases. The principles of the techniques are based on the human anatomy and physiology and the use of vital points, in order to be very effective while requiring minimal effort.
Shorinji Kempo can be practised by anyone regardless of gender or size. The nature of Shorinji Kempo training means that one's goal is not to beat others and win medals but rather to improve oneself by developing a healthy mind, healthy body and strong self defence skills.
The philosophy that underpins Shorinji Kempo means that classes are held in a friendly and supportive environment, while maintaining the traditions of Japanese etiquette. Beginners are always welcome and the first two sessions are free!
Shorinji Kempo is practised throughout the UK and all over the world. Last year we had a very successful summer camp over two days where students from all over the country came to train together and have fun, and this year we plan to go to a University Training Seminar at another University branch as well as to have an even more successful summer camp! There are also opportunities to train abroad with other federations.
Again, beginners are always welcome, so feel free to drop in and ask us any questions or have a go yourself. Meanwhile, please use the links at the top to navigate through our pages.
