University of London Union Debating Society

The ULU Debate Society is the debating society for current students and graduates of the University of London, and for other students in London currently without their own society.

We currently meet up every Wednesday at 7 pm in the ULU Building on Malet Street (usually in the Bloomsbury Suite). At that time we run workshops in debating, with the chance for you to take part in informal competitive debates, to receive some feedback afterwards from one of our coaches about the speech you've just given, and to develop your ability to construct a well-reasoned, coherent argument along with your public speaking skills.

Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

What kind of Debating do you do?

We practice competitive debating in a format called British Parliamentary Debating.

This involves four teams of two people each. Two teams are on the Proposition (in favour) of the Motion and Two Teams are on the Opposition (Against) of the Motion.

Speeches follow consecutively from the First Speaker of the Proposition, to the First Speaker of the Opposition, to the Second Speaker of the Proposition, etc. Speeches are normally between 5-7 minutes in length and preparation time is normally fifteen minutes.

Its very easy to pick up, and we debate on a variety of topics involving Ethics, Econonomics, Politics and Philosophy.

We do not at this time hold public debates.
