Welcome to the '3 Cosas Summer of Action'
The 3 Cosas campaign, the University of London Union (ULU) and the University of London branch of the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB) are jointly launching a ‘Summer of Action’ to step up and win the battle for sickpay, holidays and pensions for all workers at the University of London.
Workers and students have lobbied, petitioned, protested and rallied, for demands as basic as humane conditions and benefits at work. The University has been content to maintain a situation in which workers are effectively penalized for getting sick or injured, unable to take time to visit relatives and friends, and are expected to retire into poverty without a pension.
This is not good enough. The campaign has decided to escalate its pressure on the University with a creative and rolling programme protests, surprise publicity stunts, student-led direct action, and potential industrial action over the summer.
It is declaring the weeks of 27 May, 3 June, 10 June, 24 June, 8 July and 15 July to be Action Weeks, in which students and workers will participate in a mix of demonstrations, actions and events. Further weeks will be announced until progress is made in meeting the three demands. The campaign will not stop until victory.
Sonia Chura, a worker involved in the 3 Cosas campaign said: “We outsourced workers don’t have a dignified pension, we don’t have sick pay, and we don’t have the same amount of holidays as the direct employees of the University. It is an absolute disgrace that in the 21st century the workers at a university as prestigious as the University of London don’t have these benefits.”
Daniel Lemberger Cooper, ULU Vice President said: “So far the campaign has received widespread and enthusiastic support from students all across the University of London colleges. There is a real groundswell of opinion in favour of the workers’ demands for sickpay, holidays and pensions, and a strong feeling that the University cannot stand back any longer from granting humane working conditions for all its staff.”
