Overseas Christian Fellowship (OCF) has been at the forefront of student activities this year. The society endeavours to be a home-away-from-home for overseas students and the weekly meetings regularly attract 70-80 members for worship, bible study and fellowship.Members of OCF enthusiastically took part in a three-day project called ‘Love Your Uni’ in partnership with other ULU and UCL societies and two local churches to provide a range of activities around campus. The aim was to demonstrate love to students and get them thinking about others, i.e. outside of themselves. Examples of events were: free pancakes and various tea/coffee/baked goods giveaway stalls, a ‘chill-out room’ for students to come and relax, giving out water and flip-flops during and after ULU sports night and encouraging ‘random acts of kindness’. For example one of the students decided to buy donuts for his entire lecture theatre. The culmination of the event was a free gig in ULU organised by members of OCF.
The society provides a shining example of community outreach promoting ULU to both the student population and surrounding neighbourhood.
Tony Benn for his lifelong commitment tocampaigning against social injustice as President of Stop The War Coalition and Coalition of Resistance.
Amber Rosier
Amber is dedicated to fighting global poverty. Studying for a Masters at SOAS, majoring in economic development she has learnt Swahili to better facilitate communication with those she aspires to work with in Africa. Whilst funding herself and dealing with personal problems and the death of a close friend, she has persevered, not with the intent of bettering herself, but to better understand the issues facing those she seeks to help.
Whilst achieving great grades, Amber has worked at ULU alongside the Sabbaticals, assisting students with topical campaigns such as that for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender community and the fight against cuts to higher education. She helped organise a trip to Berlin for Holocaust Memorial day and a big event for Love Music hate Racism.
Amber’s contribution does not end there, she gives up weekends to help her community. Volunteering as an outreach officer, giving one to one counselling to HIV patients and working tirelessly to reduce stigma. Additionally Amber has been volunteering for Tenteleni, training, supporting and helping to enable 130 students to volunteer in sub-Saharan Africa. She also campaigned with Amnesty International UK, producing materials for 42,000 activists.
